Happy Batman DVD Day!

batman begins dvd reviewNew to DVD today, BATMAN BEGINS is not only clearly the best Batman film ever made, but one of the very best films of the year. Seriously. There may be one or two I’ve seen in ‘05 that beat this, but I can’t recall them right now and what does it matter? If you want the special features (and you do), pick up the two-disc set or all you’ll get is a trailer and a stupid MTV parody starring Jimmy Fallon. The two-disc set also comes with a paperback featuring three Batman comic stories that influenced the film, including the character’s first appearance in DETECTIVE COMICS.

As a backup plan for raking in the cash, Warner is also releasing THE BATMAN ANTHOLOGY today, a box set of all-new two-disc special editions of BATMAN, BATMAN RETURNS, BATMAN FOREVER and BATMAN & ROBIN. For those keeping score, that’s a respective “awesome,” “awesome,” “pretty good” and “well, given the price, it’s pretty much free.”

If that’s still not enough Caped Crusader for you, pick up Warner’s animated BATMAN VS. DRACULA movie or Columbia’s BATMAN: THE COMPLETE 1943 MOVIE SERIAL COLLECTION, also out today. Cripes, that’s a lot of bats for one day.

This is particularly noteworthy since Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman will be filling the roles for director Christopher Nolan’s follow-up to BATMAN BEGINS. [...]

[...] Because IT’S SUPERMAN! – the new novel by Tom De Haven – tells the story like you absolutely, positively have never heard it before. If you thought BATMAN BEGINS was a revisionist take on a well-known pop-culture legend, you’re about to have your definition rewritten. [...]

I really liked Batman begins. The genre of comic-book hero in cinema is not for everybody, like semi-standardized production-line films, but Mr Nolan does the hero justice in a well thought-out and meticulously crafted film. There is no need for hesitation at the cinema, Batman Begins delivers.
